Scouting was started by a man called Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell. As a boy Baden Powell enjoyed the outdoors and spent many hours pretending to be a hunter or Indian scout. He also went on expeditions with his brothers, often exploring the coast of Great Britain by boat. When they were not on water, they were hiking on the countryside carrying everything they needed on their backs.
When Baden Powell left school he joined The British Army. He traveled all over the world, serving in India and South Africa. While he was in South Africa during the Boer War, he led the defense of a small town called Mafeking against Boers. The Boers, who were Dutch Farmers that had settled in South Africa, outnumbered his man nice to one. Baden Powell Defended Mafeking for seven months. As there were so few soldiers he asked local boys to be messengers. When the help finally came, Baden Powell became a national hero in Britain for his great achievement.
"The mission of scout is to continue the education of young people". Said Lord Baden Powell.
